What is the function of landing gear?
The purpose of the landing gear in an aircraft is to provide a suspension system during taxi, take-off and landing. It is designed to absorb and dissipate the kinetic energy of landing impact, thereby reducing the impact loads transmitted to the airframe.
What are the types of landing gear?
Landing gear usually comes in three basic wheel arrangements: conventional, tandem and tricycle-type. Beyond this, landing gear is then classified as either fixed or retractable. Fixed landing gear hangs underneath an aircraft during flight, whereas retractable landing gear is stowed inside an aircraft during flight.
