Chinese astronauts on board the Tiangong space station have enjoyed watching matches from the Tokyo Olympic Games, according to the China Manned Space Agency.
Besides conducting scientific experiments, technological tests and engineering tasks, the three crew members of the Shenzhou-12 mission -- mission commander Major General Nie Haisheng, Major General Liu Boming and Senior Colonel Tang Hongbo -- also spent a lot of time exercising and connecting with life on Earth.
"Technically, we can connect them to live broadcasts, but they've chosen to watch transmitted recordings during their time off, because there are so many tasks for them to complete," the agency said in an article on its WeChat account on Friday.
"Although we are very busy in space, we also watch the Olympics on TV during our daily breaks. This adds a lot of fun to our space life," said Tang.
"The Olympic Games are very exciting, especially the competitions involving Chinese athletes which always draw our attention. The Chinese athletes have challenged themselves, made excellent performances and set many new records. This has made the Chinese people very proud. We are very happy for them," said Liu.
"This time, the Olympic organizers put forward a new motto of being faster, higher, stronger and together. There is competition, communication and hard work. There is also struggle, laughter and tears. This is the charm of the Olympics. The wonderful performances of the athletes make us feel deeply that everyone must work hard in their respective post to have a more spectacular life and become a better oneself, " said Nie.
As of Friday morning, the Shenzhou-12 crew had spent 50 days in a low-Earth orbit at an altitude of about 400 kilometers in Tiangong's core module, which is named Tianhe, or "Harmony of Heavens." They are scheduled to remain in space until mid-September, when they return to Earth.
They were sent in space on June 17 aboard a Long March 2F carrier rocket that blasted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern China. The astronauts entered Tianhe later that day, after the spacecraft docked with the module, becoming Tianhe's first inhabitants.
