Australian tennis players Ashleigh Barty and John Peers spoke to the press in Tokyo on Sunday, after they were awarded the bronze medal in the mixed doubles at the 2020 Olympics as Serbian world top player Novak Djokovic pulled out of the third-place game due to shoulder injury concerns.

"We definitely deserved to be in the bronze medal match and to be able to come away in the end with the bronze medal for our nation is the result that we wanted it. So regardless of whether we got on the court or not, I feel we deserved it," Barty said.

Barty and Peers were due to face Djokovic and Nina Stojanovic on Saturday night in the bronze clash. However, Djokovic withdrew from the competition following a three-set defeat to Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain in the men’s singles bronze bout and leaving Tokyo empty-handed. Thus Barty and Peers claimed Australia’s sixth tennis medal in Olympic history.

The Tokyo 2020 tennis competition wraps up on Sunday. The mixed doubles’ final happens to be an all-Russian affair as the two pairs representing the Russian Olympic Committee - Aslan Karatsev/ Elena Vesnina and Andrey Rublev/ Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova - are deciding who is bringing gold home. Another ROC athlete Karen Khachanov will face Germany’s Alexander Zverev in the men’s singles final.
