During previous two decades, climate change has eroded initiation of our wheat sowing time from mid of October to the 1st week of November. Wheat needs a cool period of 4-5 months for gradual growth, development and better yield. Most of the wheat varieties often suffer sudden increase in temperature especially in the south Punjab during the month of April, which lead to shriveling of wheat grain due to forced maturity. This particular wheat season has edge over most previous seasons in receiving timely rainfall for rain fed wheat and gradual decrease in temperature which may lead to early sowing of wheat.
In this video, we have advised the farmers to initiate the planting of wheat crop in accordance with temperature regimes. If maximum limits of temperature of 28-320 centigrade or less and lower limits of 14-180 centigrade or less prevail for a week or so. Then planting of wheat crop should be launched accordingly in any part of Punjab. Keeping eye watch on current change in temperature, according to my experience as assistant meteorologist, I can predict that wheat sowing may be started from 21 of October in north rainfed Punjab, from 28 October in central irrigated and from the 1st week of November in Thal area and south Punjab.
