Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova called US media outlets reports of Russian troops amassing at the Ukrainian border a "fake news campaign" during her weekly briefing in Moscow, on Wednesday.
"We took notice of the informational 'salvo' that was fired at us, at truth mostly, which occurred in American media articles regarding the fact that Russia was allegedly amassing troops at the border with Ukraine. This wasn't one fake news item, this is an entire fresh fake news campaign in American media outlets," she said.
According to the spokesperson, the photographs of tanks near the Ukrainian border were satellite pictures taken near the town of Yelnya, which is hundreds of kilometres away from Ukraine.
"American journalists published falsehoods with pleasure, providing it with photographs and video which questions whether they had any critical thinking, while they just picked footage at random from TikTok accounts. Moreover, they refer to Voronezh bloggers. Nobody contacted us," Zakharova added.
Zakharova also said the situation in Afghanistan has not changed since the Taliban took over the country and noted Moscow considers US attempts to place its military infrastructure in Afghanistan's neighbouring countries unacceptable and sees in this "serious risks for regional stability."
Earlier the US-based Politico magazine published an article with commercial satellite images showing military hardware and ground troops allegedly amassing near the town of Yelnya in the Smolensk Region. According to the media, the deployment shows "a clear deviation from this unit's standard training pattern." The article added such movements were taking place amid rising tensions between Moscow and the West.
On Tuesday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov called the reports 'cheap fake news' stressing that the movement of Russian military equipment and troops inside the country is solely Moscow's internal affair.

SOT, Maria Zakharova, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson (Russian): "We took notice of the informational 'salvo' that was fired at us, at truth mostly, which occurred in American media articles regarding the fact that Russia was allegedly amassing troops at the border with Ukraine. This wasn't one fake news item, this is an entire fresh fake news campaign in American media outlets." *MULTIPLE SHOTS AT SOURCE*

SOT, Maria Zakharova, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson (Russian): "Photos of tanks, as they were called, near the Ukrainian border appeared to be satellite photography of the territory near city Yelnya which is located hundreds of kilometres from Ukraine. Maslovka station, which was mentioned by Betsy [Woodruff Swan] and Paul [McLeary], journalists from Foreign Policy [Politico], is also located far away from Ukraine. What can I say, American journalists published falsehoods with pleasure, providing it with photographs and video which questions whether they had any critical thinking, while they just picked footage at random from TikTok accounts. Moreover, they refer to Voronezh bloggers. Nobody contacted us. I am sure that they did not get in touch with anyone from the Russian side at all, with the ones who represent our country. But this is a classic thing."

SOT, Maria Zakharova, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson (Russian): "The North Atlantic bloc seeks to expand its influence in various regions of the world in order to enhance its role in global political processes, this is already obvious. So, alliance member-states create new formats of interstate cooperation in the military field to implement these plans. We believe that NATO's attempts at dictating its vision of security architecture to the region are destructive and may seriously destabilise the situation in the Asia-Pacific region."

SOT, Maria Zakharova, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson (Russian): "I can state with regret that the situation has not changed after the Taliban came to power. Terror attacks staged by the Islamic State terrorist group in Afghan cities could be seen as an example of that. Another destabilising factor in the region is the United States’ attempts to deploy its military infrastructure and Afghan maintenance personnel in Afghanistan’s neighbouring countries. We see serious risks for regional stability in such steps."
