Ji-Yeong, on the other hand, literally sacrificed her own life for a stranger nonetheless. A stranger whose brother she had never seen. A stranger whose real name she hadn’t learned about until the last episode she was seen. But still, she chose to care enough and let that stranger live. There’s no argument here that the saddest and most heartbreaking episode of the blockbuster worldwide phenomenon Squid Game is episode 6, dubbed Gganbu. And one of these include Ji Yeong’s. Even for such little screen time, we got attached to this girl’s character, and even rooted for her. And her incredible short but sweet bond built with Kang Sae Byeok.
But first, who is Ji-Yeong?
Ji-Yeong, also known as Player 240, goes without a surname. She was first seen in the series at the Tug of War game, where Kang Sae Byeok herself found her and made her join their team. Then, returning Sae Byeok’s kindness of keeping her in, Ji Yeong asked her to be her partner in the marbles game, which turned out to be a wrong move. Ji-Yeong told Sae Byeok that she has nothing to go back to, but Sae Byeok still has her own missions to complete.
I know, mind blowing! Well, we wouldn’t know for sure how the show could have turned out if they made Ji Yeong a guy, but we know for sure it wouldn’t be any better, because the pair’s genuine friendship was the best in the series! It shows us that two complete strangers can put trust into someone in times of need. But as Squid Game director Hwang Dong Hyuk himself revealed, Ji Yeong’s name was originally Ji Yong, written for a guy. But why did he change it? His intention behind creating the relationship between Ji Yeong and Sae Byeok was to contrast. The genius of the director is evident in how the decision to change gender is what gave Squid Game fans the iconic friendship of Ji Yeong.
We all know that each character who died in the Squid Game has a little bit of foreshadowing in the earlier episodes, or how Sae Byeok hinted she would beat the person who got her money. Ji Yeong, however, had hinted at her end. She paired with Sae Byeok. When Sae Byeok asked her what she was going to do to achieve that, she replied, “whatever it takes”. And she really did whatever it took to make Sae Byeok win. She let Sae Byeok throw her marble first.

While other players create teams to make them appear strong and to have someone to rely on, Ji Yeong and Sae Byeok stuck together.They are both in the same age range after all, and somehow share an unpleasant childhood. Ji Yeong kept on telling Sae Byeok.
