Zelenskyy calls Russia 'an evil to be defeated in battle' as seized areas get 'Russified' | DW News

As the war in Ukraine enters its fourth month, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is dispelling hopes of negotiations with Russia anytime soon. In his latest video address, Zelenskyy called Russia's aggression an evil that can be contained only on the battlefield.

Ukraine says Russia is stepping up its attacks in the eastern Donbas region, with Ukrainian troops doing 'everything possible' to hold their ground. Authorities said Russia's advantage in arms and equipment was making the situation very difficult. But in his nightly address on Monday, Zelenskyy remained defiant.

Meanwhile, Russia is tightening its grip on the occupied regions of Ukraine — a sign that it has no intention of relinquishing control of these areas.

Moscow has launch infrastructure projects in eastern Ukraine and is also attempting to "Russify" the population in occupied regions: It has been handing out Russian passports and introduced the ruble as the official currency. It's also changed the telephone country code and is broadcasting Russian television.
