Exodus 4:10-12 - “But Moses said to the Lord, ‘Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent, either in the past or since you have spoken to your servant, but I am slow of speech and of tongue.’ Then the Lord said to him, ‘Who has made man’s mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now, therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak.’”
Most of us are more aware of our weaknesses and inabilities than anything else. The things that often stick out in our minds about ourselves are the things that we don’t like about ourselves. The problem with this sense of inadequacy is that it often becomes our excuse for not following God’s call for our lives.
This was Moses’ predicament. God was calling him to be the spokesperson for leading his people out of the bondage of Egypt. But all Moses could think about was his lack of eloquence (literally ‘not a man of words’) and being slow of speech (literally ‘of heavy tongue’). We don’t really know whether this slowness of speech was stuttering or some other speech impediment - but Moses saw it as something that would prohibit him leading God’s people.
But God saw it differently. Of course he was aware of Moses’ speech issues, but He also knew that as long as he was with Moses’ mouth and gave him words to say, it would be fine. In other words, God wanted to use Moses, but didn’t need him to be eloquent to do so. He just had to be willing to go.
How would you fill in the blank today? Oh Lord, I am not ____________. It’s possible that your perception of what you are not is standing in the way of what God wants to do through you. Pray with him about that today. And trust that he can use you whatever weakness you may have, and In fact, as the apostle Paul learned, God’s power is perfected in your weakness.
